Melba Abernathy - March 16, 2017

Melba Duncan Abernathy, age 86, of the Ledger Community, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 16, 2018 in the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Margie Willis Duncan, and the wife of  Pat Abernathy. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy Peters; sisters: Mae Willis, Ruby Gouge, Joan Blevins and Sue Wilson; brothers: Will, Gray, Scott, Phil, Wade and Bobby Dean Duncan. 

            Melba's greatest joy in life was her grandchildren, Cooper and Lexi Adkins and Keely and Caitlin Duncan. She also enjoyed working in her flower garden, especially in the spring. The daffodils and irises were her favorites. Melba spent many hours listening to Charles Stanley and had written multiple books of notes from his sermons. She was also an avid fan of southern gospel music.

            Melba is survived by her sons, Dean Duncan and wife Karen of Bakersville and Danny Duncan and wife Allison of Spruce Pine, NC; sister, Gale Anderson of Granite Falls, NC; grandchildren: Cooper and Lexie Adkins, and Keely and Caitlin Duncan.

            Funeral services will be 6:00 pm Monday, March 19, 2018 in the Bear Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Bruce Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:00 pm prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Gideons International, PO Box 611, Spruce Pine, NC 28777 or to the Bear Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 327 Bear Creek Church Rd, Bakersville, NC 28705.

 

Eula Woody - March 14, 2018

Eula Pitman Woody, age 75 of Alfred Woody Drive, Bakersville, NC went home to be with the Lord March 14, 2018. A native of Mitchell County, NC she was a daughter of the late Anna Mae Pitman. Eula was retired from Blue Ridge Family Practice in Spruce Pine, NC where she was a receptionist. She was also previously employed with the Mitchell County School System where she was assistant manager in the lunchroom at Bowman High School. She was a lifelong member of Bear Creek Baptist Church. Eula was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved gardening.

Survivors include one daughter Kathy Woody Young and husband Mike, of Bakersville, NC, two sons; Mark and Matthew Woody, both of Bakersville, NC, one sister Nina Grindstaff, of Newton Conover, NC, three grandchildren; Christopher Michael Young, Amber Nicole Young, and David Brian Woody, four great grandchildren;  Haven Leeann Woody, Trevin James Woody, Hunter Michael Young, and Holden Christopher Young.

She was preceded in death in addition to her mother by her husband Alfred Woody, sisters; Lennie Pitman, Janette Pitman, and Grace Pitman Searls, brothers; Howard, Harold, Dexter, Clarence, and Lawrence Pitman. 

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16, 2018 at 7:30PM in Bear Creek Baptist Church with Bruce Cannon and Chris Rathbone officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00PM until the service time. Interment will be Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 10:30AM at Bear Creek Cemetery.

Elizabeth Letterman Carpenter - March 8, 2018

Elizabeth Letterman Carpenter, 93, of Bakersville, NC passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018 in the Mission Hospital System, Asheville, NC. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Anna Mae Letterman and the wife of the late James Carpenter. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Grace Letterman; brothers, Robert and Clarence Letterman; daughter, Shelba Buchanan and sons: Jay, Larry and Jesse Carpenter; 2 great grandsons: Jacob and Josh Cox. She was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church.

          Survivors include her daughters: Linda Harrell and Jenny Briggs both of Bakersville, Betty Land of Hudson and Crystal Rowe of Morganton; sons: Frank Carpenter and Richard Carpenter both of Marion; brother, J.C. Letterman of Marion; 25 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

          Funeral service will be 7:00 pm Sunday, March 11, 2018 in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home with Chris Rathbone and Bruce Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 till 7 pm prior to the service. Interment will be 2:00 pm Monday in the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery.

 

 

Parnell Sparks - March 8, 2018

Parnell Sparks, age 80, of Morganton, went home to the Lord Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the home of his granddaughter Shelby in Bakersville.

Born on July 23, 1937, in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Fred and Nellie Pitman Sparks. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by sisters; Kate Pittman and Louise Wyatt, and brothers; Frank, Ted, Joe and Eugene Sparks.

Parnell was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Bakersville and The Mount Home Baptist Church in Morganton. He loved to fish and go loafing in his spare time. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife; Brenda Morris Sparks of the home in Morganton, his daughters; Tracey Sparks of Morganton, Portia Phillips and husband Johnny of Asheville and Deena Dickinson and husband William “Tex” of Mocksville, a son; Parnell Sparks Jr. and girlfriend GiGi Griffith of Bakersville, Ten Grandchildren, Fifteen Great Grandchildren, and a sister; Loretta Pitman of Spruce Pine.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service celebrating the life of Parnell Sparks on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 3:00 pm at the Bear Creek Baptist Church the Rev’s Chris Rathbone, Bruce Cannon and Jerry Gamble officiating. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Sunday, March 11, 2018 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the church. Interment will follow in the Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
